I have now eaten here twice and have to admit they can cook up a pretty mean steak. The staff here is friendly and what you would expect to find in a small town establishment. The food is good, and the steaks I have had twice now have been cooked correctly.
This bar is a joke! These are a bunch of close minded Michigan folk with horrible decor. I recently read about their minnow contest-the place should be shut down! How disgusting serving minnows in shots of liquor. What kind of podunk place is this? Owners, go back to your trailer park where you belong. I'm sorry, but places like this make me embarassed to live in Michigan
The Sportsman’s Bar has character, good drinks at reasonable prices, plus surprisingly good food. My daughter goes to a summer camp near Newaygo and each year she must have her last pre-camp and first after-camp lunch there. The basic bar food is a step above what you’ll find in most places and their seasoned fries are fabulous. I usually order the perch basket and have always been pleased. I’ve only had dinner at the Sportsman’s once. At the server’s suggestion, I tried the special which was Potato Chip Coated Walleye. It was amazing! I could have paid two or three times as much in a fancier place and not gotten such a fine meal. True, the salad was very ordinary, but the fish more than made up for it. This isn’t a cookie-cutter franchise type place that you’ll find Anycity USA. It is unique – that’s why we keep going back.
Food was great, their French fries are killer, drinks well worth the money, great beer selection. Service was awesome. Definitely would go again.
In the main bar area there are a few tables and 1 pool table. At the back of the dining room there is a stage area where they will have local acts come in to perform. Depending on the time of year will determine just how busy they will be. But its a great place to grab a bite to eat and unwind after a long day.
The dining room area could use a facelift. I personally am not a fan of the lodge feel with stuffed dead animals all over the place. But, I suppose when you have the name "Sportman" it is fitting to have that décor.
Sportsman is much more than just a bar...it's a family restaurant as well.
